Professional Experience

Jim is a well-rounded business lawyer working in several practice areas at the firm.  His practice focuses on banking, financial services, and all aspects of corporate commercial transactions. Jim enjoys problem solving. He works hard to find practical and creative solutions for his clients, and with the goal of getting each transaction to the finish line.

Jim has represented and provided counsel for clients from a number of sectors and industries, including Canadian Charted Banks and other Canadian, U.S., and international financial institutions; private lenders, corporate borrowers, vendors and purchasers, real estate developers, video game developers and publishers,  technology companies—including IoT companies, and clients in the hotel and hospitality industry.

Jim has particular interest in video game law and acts for a number of clients in the video game industry, both locally and in the U.S./international context. He regularly attends major industry trade functions such as the E3 Expo and Video Game Law Summit (L.A. and Vancouver), as well as the D.I.C.E. Summit organized by the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences. Jim assisted in the review and editing of Jon Festinger’s Video Game Law, the first legal text for video game law. Jim also assists with the preparation, editing, and review of the syllabus and the course materials for video game law courses at both the University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria.
